In Fritz Lang's silent movie Metropolis (1927), a young woman - Maria - is copied by a technical process; her replica, which looks a bit like a confusingly similar one, is a Maschinen- (mechanical) Maria, who seduces men by dancing and drives them crazy. Maschinen-Maria is the first gynoid to be shown on film. In Thea von Harbou's novel, it is also significant that Maria is called Futura.
